Everybody hates on Starbucks, I get it, but I'm going to tell you this story anyways. My clients and business partners (yes! Cool! exciting! Stay tuned!) hear me say "That's a latte I don't have to make.", or "stop making the f*cking lattes!" all the time. That's because the concept of making lattes changed my life, and here's why:
Howard Schultz is an entrepreneur, just like you and me! The reason why his little dream is a multi-billion dollar global corporation comes down to one little thing. Lattes.
Howard Schultz wanted to bring amazing, European style lattes to the world. He opened up his first Starbucks in the Pike Place market and worked and worked to get noticed. Noticed he was, and all of his customers said day after day how he made the best lattes on earth! This was nice for a minute, but Howie Baby was starting to realize his dream job wasn't so dreamy any more. Sure he had a successful business, but he was making lattes every single day. Without him, the perfect lattes weren't getting made. He couldn't charge $60 a latte to make it worth his time and energy, our parents were outraged that he was charging $4 a latte! In order for him to experience how dreamy a dream job could be, he had to stop making the lattes.
Howie Babe knew that his mind could do more than just make lattes, so he got clear with himself. He got clear about his desires, and restructured his business plan. Instead of putting all his unique energy into making lattes, he put all of his energy into creating the best training system available to teach OTHERS how to make lattes. That's why now when you go into any Starbucks around the world (I get it, I get it, you don't go to Starbucks ;) ) you will get a latte made exactly the same way, no matter what. Sure it's not as special as having the CEO of Starbucks make you a latte, but he's not stressing about that as he's chilling in his diamond outfit somewhere, planning the next big thing.
To stop making the lattes means something is going to have to give. You might have to ask for help. You might have to let someone hold your business baby. You might have to put down the projects you think you "should" be doing, and do what actually works to help you get clients.
This is alignment. If Howard Schultz said "If I don't do it, it won't get done", he would still be working in the market, covering shifts when people don't show up, and he'd be making those god damn lattes. By being willing to reorganize his energy, he created a business plan with scalability.
So what's a latte that you don't have to make? Is it time to leave the job that speaks nothing of your unique gifts and takes up all your time and energy? Is it time to hire an assistant to do your scheduling and emails? Is it time to rethink your marketing?
If you cap yourself low, and get hung up on the lattes, the world will not get to see your true talents. You owe it to yourself and all of us to step away from what doesn't serve you, and into your role as a leader.
You can do it!
